NokScoot, Thailand’s newest medium to long-haul budget airline, is planning to launch scheduled flights in May 2015.
The joint venture between Nok Air, Thailand’s premium budget carrier, and Singapore Airlines’ long-haul low-cost subsidiary Scoot, was initially planning to launch scheduled services in late 2014. However, the launch date was pushed back to Q1 2015 and then to Q2 2015, due to regulatory delays.
NokScoot officially received its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Department of Civil Aviation of Thailand in October 2014, paving the way for its application for operating permits and slots to its intended international routes.
NokScoot is planning to serve Japan, South Korea and China, subject to regulatory approvals. However, it has not yet announced a launch date or route.
NokScoot has been operating charter flights to Japan and South Korea before securing approvals for launching scheduled services. The budget airline has filed an application with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for Bangkok-Nanjing service from May 5, but it is still unknown whether it will be the launch route for NokScoot.
Based at Don Mueang International Airport, NokScoot will operate medium to long haul flights to international destinations with a fleet of Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The start-up has taken delivery of two B777-200 aircraft which have been leased from Singapore Airlines, with the third B777-200 to join its fleet in early April.
