Passengers on board a Monarch Airlines flight from Manchester to Malaga this morning were horrified to see a piece of the wing hanging off.
The pilot was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing after discovering somewhere near Gloucester that part of the wing had come loose.
There was also a problem with the cabin pressure, with the cabin and the rest of the plane depressurising at a different rate.
Flight ZB654 departed Manchester at 8am and was due to land in Spain around 11:30am on October 18 but at 10am the aircraft was back on the Manchester Airport runway, after having been met by fire crews.
The 154 passengers were quickly transferred to another Monarch flight to Malaga.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, passengers applauded the pilot for his quick-thinking and for landing the plane safely.
Teresa, from Knutsford, Cheshire, who was heading off on a walking holiday, said that the pilot looked ‘a little shell-shocked’ after the emergency landing.
Passengers were told that there was a technical fault and the flight was going to have to return to Manchester.
‘One of the stewardesses later said that there had been a problem with the cabin and the rest of the plane depressurising at a different rate,’ Teresa added. ‘So we were flying lower to try and sort it out. We noticed that there was a bit of the wing hanging off as well.
‘We were flying in circles for a bit – it was scary because we didn’t know what was going on. When you’re up in the air and know something’s wrong, but don’t know what, you start thinking all sorts of things. It was terrifying.’
A spokesman for Manchester Airport told MailOnline Travel: ‘A flight bound for Malaga returned and landed safely at Manchester this morning. Anyone with specific queries should contact the airline directly.’
The spokesperson also insisted that this was a ‘very minor incident’ and ‘not an emergency landing.’
In a statement released to MailOnline Travel from Monarch Airlines, a spokesperson said: ‘Monarch flight ZB654 from Manchester to Malaga returned to Manchester shortly after take-off. The aircraft developed a technical fault and in line with standard procedure the Captain requested a priority landing.
‘The flight, which was being operated on an Airbus A321 had 152 passenger, 2 infants and 7 crew including the Captain and First Officer on board, landed safely and without incident at Manchester airport.
‘Customers were transferred to another Monarch aircraft and the crew operated the flight from Manchester to Malaga with a minimal delay. Monarch would like to apologise to customers for the delay in their flight however, safety is our first priority.
‘Returning customers in Malaga will be notified of a one hour fifteen minute delay to their return flight to Manchester and issued with vouchers to use within the airports food and beverage outlets.’
