Disruptions are expected at Australia’s international airports today as more than 5,000 Australian Border Force officers stop work for 24 hours.

More than 5,000 ABF officers striking for 24 hours in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, Cairns and Gold Coast
International passengers urged to arrive for flights earlier than planned
Strike will affect passport and arrival checks and slow cargo and baggage processing
The industrial action is part of a union campaign against the Federal Government’s proposed cuts to conditions and pay.

The strike will affect all of Australia’s eight international airports, maritime ports and mail centres as frontline workers take full-action from this morning.

The stoppage by Immigration Department union members — which includes Border Force officers — could see a delay in passport and arrival card checks at air and sea ports and delayed baggage and cargo.

The Community and Public Sector Union’s Nadine Flood said the strike would affect international travellers as they passed through customs.

Skeleton staff will be on hand to check arrival cards and passports and to carry out customs inspections and screening.

Counter-terrorism and national security staff will not take part in the strike action.

Melbourne Airport is yet to experience any delays, but international passengers have been advised to arrive well in advance of flight departure times.

“We got here at 5:00 and our flight doesn’t leave here until 2:30 in the afternoon,” one traveller said.

“I’m not too worried at this point … I’ll guess I’ll wait and see until I get through the gates.”

But some travellers arriving from overseas said they had no issues during processing at Sydney Airport.

One traveller named Carly said it took her “about 20 seconds” to pass through customs.

“My friend just messaged me and said ‘it’s going to take ages, they’re all in strike’ and I thought, ‘Oh great’, but then I went straight through,” she said.

Other airports affected are Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, Cairns and the Gold Coast.
