Jane’s Walk: Chinatown is Home

Walk leader: George Wong

This walk has completed on May 5th, 2018

Chinatown is Home is a physical exploration of a well known Toronto intersection known as Spadina and Dundas. Participants who come on this walk will learn about three major topics i) Chinatown Before: The history of Chinese immigration in Toronto ii) Chinatown Today: The present day state of our Chinatowns iii) Chinatown Culture: The continuing and changing role Chinatown plays in our communities.

This Walk will tackle questions related to city gentrification, the evolving Chinese communities within the Greater Toronto Area, and the changing needs of the Toronto Chinese communities (New immigrants, seniors, youth, and first-generation/second generation Chinese-Canadians).

We will start at Chinatown Center (222 Spadina Avenue). Interested participants will find me waving a Toronto Raptors “We the North Flag”. We will end at Crimson Teas (415 Spadina Avenue).

Accessibility notes: There may be busy sidewalks, stairs, non-accessible curb-cuts and other barriers.

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), a writer, urbanist and activist who championed the voices of everyday people in neighbourhood planning and city-building. It encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
