This 30-something Canadian couple retired and has been travelling for years: here’s how they did it

You may have already heard of them. Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung made headlines in 2016 when the media picked up on the story of how the 30-something couple had saved up $1 million dollars and quit their jobs.

Now, after four years spent traveling the world, they’ve written about it in Quit Like a Millionaire, published by an imprint of Penguin Random House.

So how did they do it? By getting high-paying jobs, saving like champs, investing in the stock market and not buying a house, according to the story.

Mandarin’s free Canada Day buffet for citizens panned as discrimination

Canadian citizens are invited to eat for free at an Ontario-based Chinese-Canadian restaurant chain this Canada Day, but legal experts say the offer may come with a side of discrimination.

Brampton, Ont.-based Mandarin Restaurant is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a free meal for patrons who can prove their Canadian citizenship.

“It seems a case of putting dim sum before dignity,” said Ted Flett, an employment and human rights lawyer with Toronto-based Zubas + Associates.

“And, I think the Mandarin is opening themselves up to quite a bit of liability with this sort of a move.”

Philippines faces two million kilogram mango surplus

The Philippines has a surplus of more than two million kilos of mangoes following a bumper harvest.

The country’s agriculture secretary said the extra mangoes were the result of a “dry spell caused El Niño”.

The El Niño phenomenon occurs naturally and has a major influence on weather patterns around the world.

The government has launched a marketing campaign in a bid to sell one million kilos of the fruit in June before they begin to rot.

The Trudeau government will ban single-use plastics as early as 2021, CBC News has learned from a government source.

Plastic straws, cotton swabs, drink stirrers, plates, cutlery and balloon sticks are just some of the single-use plastics that will be banned in Canada, according to the source.

This is part of a larger strategy to tackle the plastic pollution problem that the government is expected to announce Monday.
